Encinal varsity baseball had the privilege of playing on one of the most historic fields in the MLB, the San Francisco Giants Oracle Park on Saturday, May 2. The Jets beat Tamalpais in a tight 4-2 win, with Encinal (16-6) getting 2 clutch runs in the top of the seventh inning. The game was much anticipated, as students, families and players were all very excited to visit a big league park.
Senior Matan Antebi had a showout performance, hitting two triples with one RBI. “It felt really, really special. It felt like I did a great honor to the field, to our team, to the program, and that will be marked, in my personal history, as a great achievement,” Antebi said. “It felt amazing. In life, you really don’t get many of these opportunities, so just making it count…it’s the best thing that could happen.”
With the game tied 2-2 and Evan Furuichi on base, Antebi launched a ball to left field that looked like it could leave the park. The hit gave the Jets a 3-2 lead. Senior Zach Pippen knocked in Antebi later in the inning for an insurance run. Pippen went 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.
The Jets had high energy from the moment the game started, giving them the edge they needed to pull out a win. “It was incredible. The vibes were up, so much energy in the dugout, and it was just [an] amazing, amazing feeling,” junior Sebastian Brune said. “We fought together and we just battled the whole game.” Brune pitched a scoreless 3rd inning.
The game was a complete team effort, with 6 different players allowing only three total hits. Encinal actually carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning. Freshman Enzi-Yaw Otieku sealed the win, coming in to pitch in the bottom of the seventh. With Encinal up 4-2, Otieku struck out two and walked one to get the save for the Jets. “It felt great. I was on Cloud 9 right [after the last out],” Oteiku said. Oteiku also went 1-for-2 at the plate.
Senior Donovan Masga pitched an efficient 5th inning, getting three outs on four pitches.
The game was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the team, and provided lifelong memories for the players, families, and students that were a part of the game. In between innings, the scoreboard showed videos of players when they were young along with interviews about their baseball careers. The Jets were one of five high schools to play at Oracle on May 2 as part of a Giants ticket promotion. In order for high schools to participate, the Giants ask schools to sell 1,000 tickets to upcoming Giants games. Fans had to buy Giants tickets to watch the high school game at Oracle.
The win was Encinal’s 4th in a row. With NCS playoffs right around the corner, the team has their sights set on the future, and look to make a deep run into the playoffs.
